Our class has been trying to extend the time they can “read” books by themselves without interruption. We call this building stamina. Ask your child how many minutes they can now do. Just look at these diligent readers.
Lisa, you should check out the work by the two sisters who have written The Daily Five. They have a terrific system for helping students to gradually build stamina. What I do in our classroom is based on their book.
We started school a month ago and building our reading stamina is what we have been working on. I have noticed that some children can only read for five to ten minutes and they see the need to walk around the classroom. Little by little we have been increasing the number of reading minutes. Hopefully they can get to twenty minutes soon.
Keep up the good work!
Hello Ms. Cassidy! Is there anything that you do before their reading time to encourage greater ‘stamina’ once they start?
