Hanging Out With Some Eight and Nine Year Olds

We think no one knows more about patterns than kids in grade three and four.
Today some eight and nine year old students in Ms. Cordy’s class in London, Ontario helped us practice patterns via a Google Hangout. They showed us some pictures that were patterns and some that were not patterns. We had to figure out which ones were real patterns and which were not. Because we are getting so good at patterns, we got every one right!
Thanks, Ms. Cordy’s class, for helping us to learn!

Talking to New York

This week we had our first Skype call of the year with a class of first graders in New York state. Since this was our first call, we only introduced ourselves, shared our favourite colours and had time for a few “wonders”. The students were surprised to find out it was already after lunch where they live!

Learning to Jig

Ms. Kempel, our school division’s First Nations consultant, has been teaching us about the Metis culture and some Metis jigging steps. We first learned the resting step, and then some fancy steps called bunny hop, marching step, front cross, ankles up and chigallop (pronounced chee-ga-lo). See if you can tell which ones we are doing in the video below!

Finding GREAT Foods

This week we checked our lunch boxes. We found some food that was not so good, some food that was better and some that was GREAT for our bodies. The picture above shows what the children found that they felt fell into the “great” category.

Lunch at School!

Having lunch at school is a new experience for all of the students. They look forward to eating with their friends and to getting free time in the classroom when they finish eating!

We are continuing to work on building “stamina”. In our classroom, this means the ability to stay on task working independently on our reading goals. Students get a lot of choice during this time and are learning to make choices that will work best for themselves.
