Tweeting About Fairy Tales

We have just finished up a unit on fairy tales in our classroom. As a final project, we watched a movie of a fairy tale. As they wached, the students used their iPads to tweet the fairy tale characteristics and the viewing elements that they noticed. You can see all of the children’s tweets in this Storify.

  1. Hi there! I am a fourth year education student from the University of Regina. For our ED Computer class, we were asked to look at some classroom blogs. My professor had linked your blog as something to be used as inspiration for our future classrooms.

I would just like to say that your blog is very insightful not only for you but for the parents as well! I also created a classroom blog during my internship and I had comments from parents saying that they really enjoy seeing what their child is doing in the classroom since they cannot be there. It was also really cool to see that your students are able to to tweet and they could do it on their own! I was just wondering how long it took you to teach the students how to do this or did they already know how?

Thanks for taking the time in creating this!

    • Teaching students to tweet is a gradual process and part of our literacy instruction on many days. At the beginning of the year, we read and write tweets together and as the year progresses, I gradually allow the students to do the reading and composing of the tweets. By this point, they are composing the tweets on their own and simply showing me before they publish.
